She is a Muslim American writer and wife of United Nations Diplomat, paranormal investigator with Haunted North Carolina, a TAPS family team.  She has written and lectured on diverse topics such as Afghanistan, Women in Islam, to the paranormal.  Columnist and featured writer for two lifestyle magazines in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  Her articles have also appeared in Foreign Policy in Focus, TAPS ParaMagazine and Ghost Village.  Deonna’s academic background in social theory and cultural geography helps her understand how the paranormal offers commentary on current American society.  She’s the author of the forthcoming book, Paranormal Obsession: America’s Fascination with Ghosts, Hauntings, Spooks & Spirits from Llewellyn Publishers due out in September of this year.  The book is a cultural study discussing the influence of paranormal reality TV on American society and includes perspectives from John Zaffis, Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, Troy Taylor, Michelle Belanger, Rosemary Ellen Guiley, academics, scholars and others.  Miss Sayed can provide unique perspectives due to her international experience.  She’s lived and traveled through Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa.  After many years galloping around the globe, Deonna now resides in Greensboro, NC, where she nurses an addiction to strong coffee and a disdain for yard work.

Paranormal Obsession: America’s Fascination with Ghosts & Hauntings, Spooks & Spirits

From time to time we have people asking us about EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and they are curious about how to conduct an EVP session.  Some people have no idea what to do or what kind of questions to ask.  Here are just a few examples and a little bit of advice to help you with your own EVP sessions.

We use the DAS RT-EVP while conducting our EVP sessions but any kind of recording device will work to get you started.

Make certain that you are in a quiet and controlled environment so that you will be able to hear any possible responses on your recordings.

Try to start your session by explaining to the ghost or spirit (out loud) what exactly you are trying to accomplish. You want to explain to them how the device you are using is able to capture their voice and how the process works when you play it back. It may help to actually point to the microphone while explaining how it works so that they can try and direct any comments in that direction (if they can see you). You want to also ask, not tell them, to speak as clearly and loudly as possible so that you might be able to hear them better on playback. Allow about 10-30 seconds between each question before another is asked to give the spirit ample time to answer you. Please try to verbally note all background sounds that you may hear while recording so that you will not mistake them for actual E.V.P. when processing your recordings later.

Sample questions:

• Is there anyone here that would like to talk to us?
• Can you tell us your name?
• How old are you?
• Are you alone?
• How many of you are here?
• What is your favorite color?
• Do you know what year it is?
• If so, please tell me/us.
• Can you tell us what happened to you?
• Can you see us?
• What do we look like?
• Do you know my name?
• Would you like us to leave?
• Is there any way that we can help you?
• Can you show us what you look like?
• Do you have anything to tell us?

Be sure to end your recording by letting the spirit(s) know that you are now going to listen to your recording. Let them know that if you hear anything from them you will return to communicate with them further (only if that is the truth of course).  Make sure you thank them for their time and be sure to say goodbye at the end of your recording while allowing time for a possible response.  You may even hear a spirit say goodbye.  It is a great way to end your conversation with them.

These are just a few basic questions.  Of course we suggest that you do some research on the locations where you will be conducting your EVP sessions.  Historical research will supply you with important information that will allow you to ask questions pertaining to that particular location.
